Kigali
Rwanda’s vibrant capital is modern, friendly, and incredibly clean. Visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial to understand the country’s recent history and resilience. The city is full of coffee shops, local fashion boutiques, and a fast-growing art scene. Take time to explore Nyamirambo, one of the city’s oldest and most colorful neighborhoods.
Volcanoes National Park
The crown jewel of Rwanda’s tourism, this is where you’ll trek through misty rainforest to see endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. A limited number of permits are issued each day, making this a once-in-a-lifetime, intimate experience. You can also visit golden monkeys, hike Mount Bisoke, or pay tribute to primatologist Dian Fossey.
Lake Kivu
This tranquil lake on Rwanda’s western border is ideal for rest and relaxation. Towns like Gisenyi and Kibuye offer laid-back charm, water sports, and scenic boat rides. You can even kayak from village to village along the Congo Nile Trail.
Nyungwe Forest National Park
A biodiversity hotspot with over 1,000 plant species, chimpanzees, and countless birds. Go chimp tracking, walk the canopy bridge suspended above the forest, or enjoy guided hikes through lush, green landscapes. Nyungwe is a dream for eco-tourists and wildlife lovers.
Akagera National Park
Located in eastern Rwanda, this park is home to the Big Five and offers a classic safari experience with a twist. Thanks to a successful rewilding program, Akagera is once again teeming with lions, elephants, rhinos, buffalo, giraffes, hippos, and hundreds of bird species. Game drives, boat safaris, and luxury lodges make this an increasingly popular destination.
